Nyhavn: The Haven of Copenhagen

Posted on 06:37 by Unknown
During one of my winter walk around Copenhagen, I came across these color facades on the both side of the frozen river. Much to my curiosity, this colourful place is called Nyhavn which is a 17th century waterfront, canal and entertainment district. Sounds like ‘New Haven’, Nyhavn is lined by many townhouses, bars, cafes and restaurants. Historically, Nyhavn was constructed by King Christian V from 1670-73, and dug by Swedish war prisoners from the Dano-Swedish War 1658–1660.

Basically, Nyhavn canal serves as a gateway from the sea to the old inner city where trading and businesses were carried out. To my surprise, it was also notorious for beer, sailors, and prostitution.

The northern side of Nyhavn are in odd numbers whereas the southern side of Nyhavn are in even numbers. The famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nyhavn 18 for some years which is a lavish mansion. Currently, the canal is being used for boating recreational activity served as Nyhavn Veteran Ship and Museum Harbour.

Note: Most of the photos below are edited into HDR format (High Dynamic Range Photography).

My favourite shots among others. This colorful facade is the Southern Side of Nyhavn

A HDR (High Dynamic Range) Version which is also the Southern Side

that's me and finally an identifiable building along the frozen canal of Nyhavn, the Nyhavn 17. Bar and Restaurant

During the winter, all the boats and yacht are not operating at all

A restaurant yacht which is not operational during the winter season

A drawbridge for small ships and yacht waiting to operate back again during the summer and spring.
During the winter everything is 'magically' frozen. But I'm sure that during the summer, everything will be vibrant in which I hope to experience the summer mood in Scandinavian countries in the near future.

Long Live the Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej

Posted on 10:55 by Unknown
I'm very sure that anyone who has been to Bangkok must be wondering why are there so many posters (huge and small) of the Thai King around the city, buildings, shopping complexes, hotels etc you name it you got it~

It's not that it's a rule or even part of the law. It's not because the Thai King  is the longest serving monarch in the world. It is because the Thai King, King Bhumibol Adulyadej is highly revered by his people. Visitors and tourists of Thailand might not understand this but I have been in the land of smiles for almost 2 years for my studies. I found from the people that he is the most kind-hearted king and most loved king by the people of his nation I have ever seen in my whole life. I have heard of the King's kind hearted deeds towards his own people, e.g. helping the poor by setting up royal projects; giving up part of his palace ground for agricultural research; during the flood in Bangkok, the Thai King even requested for the flood water to be diverted into his palace ground and He even join in to the discussion on how to solve the flood problems during the big flood which happened last year 2012. Such King is very rare these days in the modern world of democracy. He is the King worthy of love and respect by everyone!

To commemorate my return to Bangkok this year after 2 years, just like the Thais, I would like to wish the Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej continuous long life.

Bangkok's Baiyoke Tower II

Posted on 09:56 by Unknown

Sawasdee krub! This year 2012 mark my return to Bangkok, the land of smiles, my second home after 2 years of hiatus. Full of nostalgic feelings however, there’s a place which I have not visited for the past few years till now. Yes the Baiyoke Tower II, the tallest building in Thailand. The building is 304 m (997 ft) tall, or 328 m (1,076 ft) tall with the antenna included. Situated at Ratchathewi district, the tower has 85 floors with a public observatory on the 77th floor. To enter the top of the tower, you are required to purchase a ticket of 400 baht person (300 baht before 6pm; free for hotel guest). The ticket price includes snacks and cocktail of your choice at the “Roof Top Bar & Music Lounge” on the 83rd floor and a 360 degrees revolving roof top deck which is situated on the 84th floor. The Baiyoke Tower II is also known as Sky Hotel which is the tallest hotel in Southeast Asia and the fourth tallest in the world with 673 guest rooms.

The photo of the tower taken from afar nearby the Central World Shopping Complex in the year 2008. On wall, the advertisement for "BMW: A Brand to look up to" still remains the same even now

Baiyoke Tower and Sky Hotel at night ~ tall feeling
showing off the tickets we have bought
at the 77th floor, there is a public exhibition hall about the history and construction of the tower. This is one of the concrete used to construct the Baiyoke Tower II
That's me 'flying' across the Baiyoke Tower II on a hot air balloon

Up next, is the revolving observatory platform on the 84th floor on the Bangkok skyline view~~

My Favourite skyline shot colorful and balanced exposure..

The threading highway of Bangkok

My favorite method of aerial photography..45 degrees tilt to get the round Earth feeling...
cheers with some kind of green pineapple cocktail with some snacks
shots taken at a lower level of the tower at the hotel lobby
From another side of the hotel lobby from far you could see the huge poster of the revered Thai King Bhumibol on the Novotel Hotel.

The New Air Asia Queens Park Rangers A320 Official Partner Aircraft

Posted on 22:02 by Unknown
I have been hearing about the new Air Asia Queens Park Rangers Official Partner Airbus A320 Aircraft and finally I managed to get a ride on this new beautiful aircraft. I thought it was cool therefore I decided to write up a post to compliment Air Asia again even though I have my personal 'feud' with the Airlines due to some bad consumer practice.

Yea..I am not a fan of Queens Park Rangers or better known as QPR in the Barclays Premier League even more so they 'allowed' 2 extra goals for Manchester City in the final minutes and that has caused Manchester United to lose the title (I'm a Red Devils fan by the way). Nevertheless, since its largest shareholder is none of other the founder and CEO of Air Asia, Datuk Tony Fernandes, QPR and Air Asia have been bringing Malaysian name to new heights for the correct reason of course.

The new Official Partner Airlines for Air Asia is ready to be onboard for Penang to Kuala Lumpur flight

At the front of the Aircraft, you could spot this name 'Alan McDonald'. He's not a designer of this aircraft or pilot or whatsoever but Alan McDonald is a long time player for QPR football club. The name was in-scripted on this aircraft in remembrance and memory of his spell in QPR after he death in this year 2012 July.

The rear of the aircraft is even more spectacular with the nicely painted logo of Queens Park Rangers
Inside the new aircraft, it's a whole new interior. Instead of the trademark red and white color, it is replaced with cool bluish and white finish. On every blue color painted on the luggage door, you could see all the history about Queens Park Rangers Football Club
One of the history is about their former player Les Ferdinand joining Newcastle United for a record fee.

In front of the hot seat,  at the divider, the players of Queens Park Rangers football club signed their autograph on it.
While the QPR football club managed to maintained their position in the Premier League Division, I sincerely wish them the best of luck in this new season as well!

Awesome Beaches in Australia

Posted on 03:00 by Unknown
Speaking of Australia aka the ‘Down Under’… that is one of my future travel list. Though I have not been to ‘down’ there yet but that does not deter me to research and write up on some of the cool beaches to be visited in Australia. Forget the outback and even the populous Gold Coast! Here’s some of my top 4 awesome beaches to be explored in Australia as part of my yet another sponsored post in promoting flights to Australia

1. Bondi Beach

Arguably Australia’s most well known beach but I have not heard about it. Well situated in New South Wales, it’s a mecca for tourists, lifesavers, and surfers. Due to long sun rays, it’s a perfect place for sun surfers. Just a few minutes away from vibrant Sydney, Bondi beach is a place to be hit!

2. Cable Beach

Ever wondered by it was named that way? Yes Cable Beach was named after the telegraph cable laid between Broome and Java in the year 1889. Renowned as one of the most stunning beaches in the world, Cable Beach is a twenty-two kilometres pristine white sand beach situated near Broome, Western Australia. Filled with my kind of turquoise water facing the Indian Ocean, it is a perfect place for surfers as the tide can reach over nine metres. The sunset is one of the most magnificent you can ever see in the world.

3. Hyams Beach

A small seaside village situated at the south of Sydney, it is an excellent holiday area for families. Hyams Beach is famous for holding the whitest sand in the world in the Guinness Book of Records.

4. Whitehaven Beach

Situated on an uninhabited Whitsunday Island near Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach the beach is so dazzling that it hurts to look at without sunglasses. Awards galore! The beach won the Queensland’s Cleanest Beach Award 2008 in Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge. In July 2010, Whitehaven Beach was named the top Eco Friendly Beach in the world by CNN.com. Pets especially dogs are not permitted on the beach and smoking is prohibited/banned (that’s the best part!). Unlike regular sand, the sand on does not retain heat making it comfortable to walk barefoot on a hot day. This is a natural feature I have never heard of.

So what are you guys waiting for? Hurry up book your flights to Australia now and enjoy those beaches.

Erawan Museum: Thailand's Gargantuan Three Headed Elephant

Posted on 09:16 by Unknown
Since I am heading to Bangkok by tomorrow morning, I guess I should write a post on Thailand first. This time it's about the not so known place in Bangkok.

Erawan Museum, even when the name is mentioned..I guess not many have heard about this cool museum. Unknown to many Bangkok visitors, this gargantuan three headed Elephant museum is situated at Samut Prakan Province which is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan City. Weighing 250 tonnes, towering 29 meters high, and 39 meters long, this pure cast copper statue took ten years to be constructed. Inside the towering museum consists of three levels according to Buddhist cosmology. Let's take a look what's inside. Mind that the photos were all captured in the year 2008 by my old faithful Sony DSC H-1.

Beautiful lotus pond surrounding the Erawan Museum

Inside the museum, you will be greeted by lots of carvings and arts according to Buddhist Cosmology

That is the carvings depicting the Demon King Mara. In Buddhism, Mara is the demon that tempted Gautama Buddha by trying to seduce him with the vision of beautiful women who are Mara's daughters. In Buddhist cosmology, Mara personifies unwholesome impulses, unskillfulness, the "death" of the spiritual life. He is a tempter, distracting humans from practicing the spiritual life by making the mundane alluring or the negative seem positive.

On the left: Carving of Thai influenced Buddhist Deity
On the right: Jade Buddha Statue
That's me 4 years ago!
If you look up, you can see one huge beautiful and colorful glass art
The glass art is a mix of western and eastern design accompanied by Buddhist Cosmology theme

Beautiful carvings of Naga on Silver plate

Another interesting carvings I have accidentally stumbled upon is the silver carvings of Jesus Christ giving sermons to the people and also during his death on the cross.

This is my favourite...very beautiful carvings of a giant fish especially its scales

One of the beautiful antiques being exhibited there

At the top, inside the belly of the Elephant is a place depicting one of the heavens in Buddhist Cosmology, the  Trāyastriṃśa  (Tavatimsa) heaven.

In this floor, there is a Buddha statue located here. Of course, the Lord Buddha does not dwell in this realm.

That's all for now. ! Enjoy!
